How to name a website comes down 6 simple steps.
If you’re a parent, how long did you take to choose a name for your child? Probably more than ten minutes.
First impressions count so no doubt you ran that name with your family name to make sure it “sounded” good. If your family name is Hood then there’s a good chance you wouldn’t call your son Robin. You probably even tried to work out if it could be abbreviated or worse yet, what type of nicknames could be derived from it.
Pity the child named Richard Head.
So if you’ve decided your future lies on the Internet then you need to put some effort into choosing a Domain Name.
How to name a website, ie your choice of Domain Name, is as important as naming your child.
The reason being, if you want to make a good first impression in business, your Domain Name is going to represent WHO and WHAT you are.

So, let’s get to it: How To Name A Website In 6 Simple Steps.
Firstly, WHY should you have a Domain Name in the first place?
Because it says to the world that you mean business. If you don’t have a Domain Name no one is going to take you seriously.
I’ll give you an example of why.
If you're starting to promote yourself on the Internet and your communication has a contact email address of hotchillimama99@hotmail.com how professional do you think that looks?
Whereas if you have a suitable Domain Name and your communication looks like thisKelly@OnlyInternetSolutions.com you’ve already branded yourself as someone who means business.
You have one shot at a first impression. Your choice of Domain Name matters.
So, here are the 6 points to consider when trying to work out how to name a website.
1 ) K.I.S.S – Keep it Simple, Stupid!
The first rule of how to name a website is to find something that is easy to SAY, SPELL and REMEMBER.
2 ) To dominate in rankings you MUST have a keyword in the Domain Name.
The second rule of how to name a website is that your keyword must appear in your Domain Name. Do your research here. Whatever your market is, go to Google Keywords and choose a Domain Name that has a keyword with a high ranking. You want people to be able to find you quickly. This is a huge subject and I've written a separate blog about Keyword Research so check that out for a more in-depth look at how to do it properly. Your business depends on it!
3 ) Can it be misunderstood?
The third rule of how to name a website is to choose a domain name that cannot be misunderstood. There will be times when you will have to give your website address over the phone. So think twice before you use a number or something that could have two spellings.
For example, lets say you have a Sewing business.
www.SewEasyToSew.com could be misunderstood as www.SoEZ2Sew.com
4 ) Take it all!
The fourth rule of how to name a website depends on your vision. If you plan on being massively successful then you want to make sure no-one can piggyback off your success in the future.
Register everything similar to it. Think plural, think hyphens, think of all the variations possible.
So, let’s use the example above www.OnlyInternetSolutions44.com.
I would recommend also registering the following:
Also, use a bit of forward thinking.
You may want to consider registering more than one extension of your Domain Name.
For Example:
Remember, when someone types in your website address, it is not case sensitive. So you can use capital letters in your website address to make distinctions between words.
Also, it is imperative you register your Domain Name as a “.com”. People will invariably type it in out of curiosity. So if you’ve chosen an extension other than a “.com” you might lose some potential clients.
5 ) Consider using YOUR name in your Domain Name
Sometimes it can be really frustrating finding a suitable Domain Name. You finally settle on one that ticks all the boxes, and then you find it’s already taken! So consider using your own unique name.
So the fifth rule of how to name a website is to consider branding yourself via your name. I'm sure off the top of your head you can rattle off a few people right now who have branded their name. Again, this depends on your vision.
How big are your dreams? Are you planning to play small or large in life?
Examples to consider:
However if your name is hard to pronounce, let alone spell, like Wojciechowski, I’d recommend to keep looking! No offense!
6) Finally, keep it generic.
The last rule on how to name a website is to choose a name that can allow your business to evolve over time. So try NOT to choose a Domain Name that is too specific.
For example, if you build a successful business around a specific company name like Legal Shield, and then you want to move in a different direction to selling health and wellness products, it’s going to be difficult with the specific Domain Name you’ve chosen. Try to make it all encompassing.
So, final tips!
When you’re ready to take the plunge and register your Domain Name my strongest recommendation is to go to either GoDaddy orHostGator.
They each have incredible customer service.
When you’re ready to host your domain name go straight to HostGator. In my opinion, they can’t be beaten.
So now you've worked out how to name a website you’re ready to go out there on the internet and knock ‘em dead with your high ranking, professionally branded, easy to “say, spell and remember” domain name.
Good luck!
